Spencer Fournell, 18-1 Head Coach

•  Spencer is ntering his 15th year of coaching volleyball and has coached at the youth, collegiate, and national levels. Throughout his career, he has developed a reputation for building technically skilled, competitive teams while helping athletes reach their full potential.
• Spencer currently serves as a Head Coach at Momentous Volleyball Club, where he led the club to its first-ever USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship medal, earning a Bronze Medal in the 14U American Division at the 2023 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship. He has also coached at Sunshine Volleyball Club, where he helped lead an 18U team to a USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship Gold Medal, and has served as a USA Volleyball High Performance Camp Coach.
• At the collegiate level, Spencer was the Technical Coordinator at Cal State Fullerton and an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Coker University, where he helped produce conference award winners, NCAA statistical leaders, and historic program success.
• In addition, Spencer spent four years as a Lead Coach with Gold Medal Squared, traveling to more than 15 states to train athletes and coaches using one of the nation’s premier volleyball development systems.
• As a player, Spencer competed at Redondo Union High School, SCVC, El Camino College, and Belmont Abbey College, and was a CBVA AAA-rated beach volleyball player.
• Spencer is passionate about developing confident, fundamentally sound athletes through high-level training, competitive environments, and a commitment to long-term player development. His goal is to help every athlete grow both on and off the court while fostering a love for the game.

Shane Beatty, 17-1 Head Coach

• Coached CA Volley 2024-present 16, 17 and 18-1s teams
• Gold medal finish at 2026 USAV West Coast Qualifier 18 Open
• Currently Head Coach Boys Varsity volleyball, Assistant AD and Head of the International Business Program at Fairmont Preparatory Academy
• Previously Head Coach at St. John Bosco High School
• Coached Team Rockstar to a 15U National Championship in 2018
• Coached collegiately at Holy Names University and Long Beach City College
• Played collegiate volleyball as a Setter at Hope International University
• Won USAV Open National Championship as a player

Adam Bernstein, 16-1 Head Coach

• My name is Adam Bernstein, and I’m excited to join the coaching staff at Cal Volley Boys Volleyball Club. With eight years of coaching experience at both the high school and club levels, I’m passionate about helping athletes develop their skills, confidence, and love for the game.
• My volleyball journey began at Tustin High School, continued through club volleyball, and culminated at Loyola University Chicago, where I had the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level.
• Over the course of my coaching career, I spent three seasons as the girls beach volleyball coach at Crean Lutheran High School, where our team won the CIF Division 2 Championship in 2023. I also recently completed my first year as the boys volleyball coach at Northwood High School, leading the team to the CIF Division 4 Quarterfinals.
• I believe in creating a positive, competitive environment where athletes are challenged to reach their full potential while learning the value of teamwork, discipline, and accountability. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Cal Volley family and look forward to working with our athletes as they continue to grow both on and off the court.

Shawn Patchell, 15-1 Head Coach

• Over the past two decades, Patchell has accumulated a 230-145-1 record as an NCAA head coach.​​​
• Served as the head coach at Concordia from 2013-21. During that time, he helped elevate the program from NAIA to NCAA Division II status. Once elevated, Patchell’s teams at Concordia earned national rankings, collected landmark victories over ranked teams and established CUI as a team that competed at the highest level against opponents from Division I schools.
  During his time at CUI, he coached the school’s first first-team All-league honorees, including athletes who earned AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors. He also led CUI to a second-straight NAIA National Conference Championship appearance at the NAIA National Invitational. He was voted NAIA National Conference Coach of the Year and coached two NAIA All-Americans.
• He was the head coach at NCAA DI powerhouse Brigham Young University from 2006-2010. He was an assistant with the Cougars from 2002-2006, including the team’s two MPSF championships in 2003 & 2004, and the NCAA National Champions in 2004.
• Patchell’s involvement with USA Volleyball is extensive as well. He was the head coach of the Men’s National Team in the spring of 2012 at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic where they won the gold medal. He worked as an assistant with the Men’s National Team in 2011 and 2010 and was the head coach of the Boy’s Junior National Team in 2009 and head coach of the Boy’s Youth National Team in 2008, where they took a bronze medal at the NORCECA Zone Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador. He coached the Pan Am team again in 2013 in Mexico City.
• Patchell began his coaching career in 1994 as an assistant coach at Irvine High School, and was the head coach at Laguna Beach High School from 1997-2002. His boys’ team won the Pacific Coast League in 1997 and 1998, and the girls won the conference in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Patchell’s collegiate coaching career began in 1995 as a graduate assistant at UC Irvine.
• A member of BYU’s first NCAA men’s volleyball team, Patchell was a starter all four years during his tenure in Provo. He went on to play professionally in Spain on the indoor and sand volleyball circuits before returning to the states and beginning his coaching career in 1993.  He has also coached club volleyball since 2009.

• Shawn and his wife Davis have four children: Jordan, Sage, Soren and Kai.

Kristen Markowitz, 14-1 Head Coach

Kristen has 16 years of club volleyball coaching experience. She grew up in San Diego and started playing volleyball at 13 years old. Played for Epic Volleyball Club, Westview High School, Lee University in Tennessee, and Vanguard University of Southern California.

2025-2026 CA Volley 14-1 with a Bronze Medal finish at 14 Open USAV Boys Junior National Championships

2021-Current Momentous Volleyball club 13’s, 15’s, and 18’s. With multiple teams at National appearances
